There can be a lot of nervousness about coming to your first appointment. There can be a lot of excitement too. Thinking about beginning therapy can be a process of its own.
If you just don’t feel like it is the right time for you, that’s okay. Going to therapy when you aren’t ready can get in the way of achieving your goals. You could feel frustrated and pressured to make changes that you’re not committed to and this might lead to additional negative thinking. That being said, there is no "perfect" time to start therapy, you don't have to wait until a point of crisis and sometimes it takes a few starts as you search for the right fit with a therapist.
In the meantime you have options.
Focus on Self Care:
Do some research into Mindfulness, Relaxation and Mediation. There are a lot of resources locally and online.
Look into ways to improve your health with exercise, sleep "hygiene" and eating well.
Connect with community support groups.
Talk to your Physician or Health Care Provider.
Set and maintain boundaries with people in your life that do not contribute to your well-being. Reach out to people who listen to you and help you feel confident about yourself.
If you are struggling with substance use concerns, practice safe use and consider accessing agencies who operate under a harm-reduction model.
Writing down your feelings can help reduce overwhelming emotions and intrusive thinking. If you don't want to keep your writing around that's ok too - the purpose is to help put context to your thoughts and emotions.
Try to find ways to engage with your creative interests.
Connect with nature.
