Recognize the impact of toxic stress in children. When a child experiences fight, flight, or freeze in children, it often goes unrecognized for what it truly is—a physiological response to a perceived threat. Recognition is the first step in helping the child. So how can you tell the difference between fight, flight, or freeze, and other challenging behavior such as oppositional defiance, hyperactivity, or avoidance?
With gratitude to Dr. Porges for his work, this handout explores and explains Polyvagal Theory in user-friendly language. Because we humans are meaning-making beings, what begins as the wordless experiencing of neuroception drives the creation of a story that shapes our daily living. Dr. Stephen Porges, originator of Polyvagal Theory, identified a biological order of human response that is active in all human experience.

Parenting through your child's emotional dysregulation. During the stress response, your child might experience a racing heartbeat, sweaty palms and tense muscles. As much as you may want to reason with your writhing child, don’t expect them to listen. For one thing, the stress response can dampen a child’s already-limited capacity for self-control, a function generally associated with the prefrontal cortex. Click the PDF here:

Are you experiencing overwhelming emotions and distressing thoughts? You are not alone. Crisis lines are staffed by trained individuals and are open at hours that other services are closed. There are several local crisis lines that can help you deal with a variety of situations including mental health, domestic violence, sexual assault, etc.
Leaving an abusive relationship? No one should feel unsafe. If you are in an unsafe, sexually violent, psychologically/emotionally/financially abusive, physically violent, or controlling relationship, you might be thinking of leaving. You do not have to leave today or do it all at once. But a safety plan can help you know what to do when you are ready to leave. Having a plan in place can help you get out safely later if you do decide to leave. Click to find local supports in Niagara.
Have you been recently sexually assaulted? You have options. The Niagara Sexual Assault Centre's Emergency Response Program will assist you in getting the help you need. Click for more information.
Have you experienced a crime within the last 90 days? Limited financial assistance is available to victims of violent crimes in the Niagara Region who require immediate assistance. The program is designed to fill the gap between the time a crime occurs and when the victim receives longer-term support services. You may be eligible for $1000 toward counselling and/or funding for other services.
